Final Year Project - ArtNet

As part of a Software Engineering Degree at UWA, each student has to undertake a year long project in their final year. My project was a combination of my interests in computing and lighting.

My work is centered around a network protocol called ArtNet, which enables theater lights to be controlled over computer networks. Take a look at What is ArtNet? for more information about what it actually does.

Project Aims

• Develop a library that implements ArtNet on POSIX systems (inc. Mac OS X)
• Develop a gtk port of ArtNetView, a basic ArtNet program
• Develop a gtk based lighting console program
• Develop an ArtNet <-> DMX gateway using the libraries and the Enttec Open DMX Interface
• Use ArtNet over the Internet
• Evaluate the performance of the ArtNet protocol in both wired and wireless networks
• Have a lot of fun!

All the original goals were accomplished (which is quite rare for most final year projects!)
